A lot of people fall in love with poker because it simply is a brilliant game that mixes luck, skill and psychology to win. Poker players have to be sharp and have to be in tune with the psychological aspect of the game to be a great poker player.

Another reason why poker is such a brilliant game is because it offers many variations of the same principle. Once you learn a particular type of poker game, you learn all the other variant’s core principle. When you get bored with that particular game then you can try another poker variation and just apply the same principles.

So, here are some basic poker rules that you should be aware of as they apply both to online and land-based casino poker games. Once you have mastered these rules, you can start being good in any poker variation of your choice.

Online Poker Rules # 1: Most poker games will use the standard deck which contains 52 cards. Let us be clear with what a standard deck is; it’s composed of 13 varying rank of cards which range from 2 to 10. In addition, there are the ace card, king, queen and Jack. All of these ranks come in four different suits which  include diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades.

Online Poker Rules # 2: Sometimes, there will be a wildcard in a deck, the joker. However, these wildcards are not used in online or land-based casinos. The wildcard is usually found in home poker games.

Online Poker Rules # 3: Similar to land-based casinos, online poker games revolve around betting into a common fund, popularly known as the pot. The game also involves receiving and replacing cards.

Online Poker Rules # 4: Action done by the players are always made in a clockwise direction. The number of times players have to bet and cards have to be drawn will depend on the variation of poker being played.

Online Poker Rules # 5: Players must somehow contribute to the pot equally. What generally happens is a player will either have ante or wager on blind bets which will be placed in the community pot. The cards are dealt and given to the player and the betting circle takes place.

Online Poker Rules # 6: On each players turn, he or she may choose to do the following:

Say check. If there is no bet on the table, the player can choose 0 and pass the next move to the next player.

Say call. The player decides to match the bet of the previous players.

Say bet. If there is no bet on the table.

Say raise if a bet exists and he wants to increase the money in the pot.

Say fold when the player decides he doesn't want to play the round. Folding is as good as forfeiting a player’s chances of winning the pot. The player surrenders the cards without showing them to the other players.
